Framing
Related to linking is framing.
Framing permits the segmentation of an Internet browser into separate sections which permits the displaying of separate information in each frame. There is also the ability to have the frames interact with one another. For example, one frame may contain a site map and the other frame could contain the corresponding information when a link in the site map is clicked.

Framing becomes a concern when third party information is displayed in the frame. For example, in the case of the Washington Post v. TotalNews TotalNews had used frames to display news from other sources while at the same time using other frames to display information about TotalNews and to display third party advertising. This case was settled. This type of activity can give rise to a number of problems such as trademark infringement and copyright infringement. Other more exotic things were alleged such as tortuous interference with business relationships and misappropriation of commercial property.

Internet law is a branch of law that encompasses a number of different areas of law as they related to activity occuring over the Internet. Those areas of law include general commercial law, privacy law, copyright law, trademark law, domain name law, defamation and tax. What is interesting about the Internet is that its development permits many different ways for individuals and organizations to interact with one another. For example, the Internet permits individuals to easily reach any number of other indiviuals around the World.

On the other hand, much of the law relating to the Internet was developed before the Internet existed. This can create difficulties when activities on the Internet are shoe-horned into laws that were developed without the Internet in mind.
